1. Classics Malt Shop

3625 Midway Drive Suite B San Diego, CA 92110
(619) 226-1600

This retro throwback place is famous for its fantastic burgers, but we keep coming back for the food and the 50’s diner atmosphere. Snag a counter seat or a comfy booth as you sit back and enjoy a fun burger joint reminiscent of days gone by. We love their Chocolate Malt, made the old-fashioned way (and it tastes like it) to go along with a classic Patty Melt, or if we are ravenous, the Hungryman Burger that comes with four ¼ lb patties along with all the traditional burger toppings.

2. Anny’s Fine Burger

5375 Kearny Villa Road Suite 101 San Diego, CA 92123
(858) 278-0618

Any burger aficionado can tell right away that this counter-service burger joint is going to be great just by reading about the favorite burgers offered up at Anny’s. Some of the crazy-good burgers you can try here are the Teriyaki Burger, the Monster Burger and the Tilapia Fish Burger for when you are craving fresh seafood but a burger sounds delicious, too.

3. Duke’s Old Fashioned Onion Burgers

5020 Baltimore Drive La Mesa, CA 9194
(619) 439-6177

The huge burgers at Duke’s are destined to become a favorite. Smothered in onion and smashed on the grill, they are enormous, and you might have to share (but you won’t want to). Snag a single Duke’s Way or customize your toppings. And don’t forget to order some Spanish Fries (with jalapeños) or Bacon Cheese Fries to round out what we think is one the tastiest burger meals in San Diego.

4. Funky Fries and Burgers

3030 Plaza Bonita Road Suite 1108 National City, CA 91950
(619) 773-6232

The burgers at Funky are out of this world so come hungry. Our favorites are the Hangover Burger with truffle aioli, the Pizza Burger adorned with pepperonis and mozzarella sticks, and of course the Funky OG with cheese, a classic cheeseburger that arrives with a side of Funky sauce for dipping. Fries can come topped with everything from Buffalo chili mac and cheese to Angus Pastrami. But don’t miss out on the shakes at Funky, over-the-top creations like the Nothing But Velvet Shake that comes with a whole slice of Red Velvet cake on the rim.

5. STP Bar-N-Grill

5487 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard San Diego, CA 92117
(858) 430-6911

The cold-smoked BBQ style of cooking here makes burgers at the STP a standout. This burger joint has a cool garage theme that makes you feel even more hip after just one visit here. And their burgers, like the Fatboy with caramelized onions and the Hatchback with the namesake New Mexico green chiles, are not to be missed.

6. Crazee Burger

3993 30th Street San Diego, CA 92104
(619) 282-6044

The most unique and undeniably delicious burgers in San Diego come from Crazee Burger. Here you can order a burger made with every meat under the sun: a Turducken Burger, Elk, Venison, Gator and even Camel. If you can’t decide, pick their Exotic Sliders platter and taste three unique burgers in one meal.

7. Del’s Hideout

5351 Adobe Falls Road San Diego, CA 92120
(619) 255-8175

Along with a full menu, Del’s Hideout serves up tasty burgers that are very popular in San Diego. Del’s only has four burger options but they are all standouts. We love the TJ Burger with pepperjack cheese and chipotle aioli, and we crave Del’s Street Corn side instead of fries (but we get that too sometimes).

8. The Butcher N Cheese

4705 Clairemont Drive Suite C San Diego, CA 92117
(858) 483-3723

This hidden gem in Clairemont is a must-go spot. They do everything well here but we love their Bourbon Burger for its boldly flavored sauce and the Baja Burger for its rich poblano, siracha and guacamole toppings. Instead of fries, order the Fig Jam and Goat Cheese jar made of layered goodness that comes with crispy toasts for dipping.

9. Hodad’s

945 Broadway San Diego, CA 92101
(619) 234-6323

Hodad’s is the downtown burger joint offshoot from their equally popular beachfront location. Locals in the know call Hodad’s the best around and their tongue-in-cheek description as the World’s Best is probably not far off from the truth. Guy Fieri inspired the Guido Burger, and it is wildly popular here. But the Double Bacon Cheeseburger with a side of Frings is a beloved menu option here as well.
