Killer Whale Sex Club

922 N 6th St Phoenix, AZ 85004

The trick to visiting this speakeasy-style spot is just knowing it is here and walking through the door. But with a name like Killer Whale Sex Club, this swanky bar is hard to miss although the rough exterior hides one of the cooler joints in town. Cozy up to the bar and order your cocktail while your eyes adjust to the very dark interior. We suggest a Killer Paloma or a 44-ounce Killer Mojito to share with your group while you scan the thousands of polaroids that cover the walls and ceiling in this memorable speakeasy.

The Captain’s Cabin

5114 N 7th St Phoenix, AZ 85014
(602) 265-8454

This secret bar next to Hula’s serves libations just as sweet as its Hawaiian sibling. After stepping through the unmarked door into the aptly named Captain’s Cabin, you will be greeted with 1920’s jazz in the cozy candlelit space. This hidden gem is served by the “captain” at the bar who will pour up one of the signature drinks like The Wench or a Shipwrecked in Scotland.

UnderTow

3626 E Indian School Rd Phoenix, AZ 85018
(602) 887-9049

Enter this tiki-inspired speakeasy through the Grand and down the stairs to this underground spot. Once inside, a wooden tiki god will greet you on your way to your bar seat or table with a porthole. Order a cocktail at this over-the-top but highly enjoyable speakeasy like the Piranha’s Kiss of Death made with absinthe or the cheerful Happy Buddha from the menu that includes seafaring stories. And be sure and call ahead to reserve your pre-paid spot at this highly sought-after speakeasy in Phoenix to guarantee that you can experience a night at the UnderTow.

Gin & Reel

5415 E High St Ste 103 Phoenix, AZ 85054
(480) 420-3223

The payphone at the back of The Stir coffeeshop is your entrance into the Gin & Reel, but be sure to find out the daily password on Gin & Reel’s social media before you arrive. A huge wall of spirits and a comfortable bar make this speakeasy a favorite destination for Arizonans as well as guests in town. Order the G&T flight to go along with the Charcuterie Board, both perfect for sharing.

36 Below

3620 E Indian School Rd Sip Coffee and Beer Garage Phoenix, AZ 85018
(480) 336-8812

This underground speakeasy is accessed down the stairs just outside of Sip Coffee. A very popular spot, reservations are recommended because 36Below only has a few seats available. Some of our favorite drinks here are the Antediluvian, served out of a Greek goddess’s statue and Plato’s Atlantis, a stunning concoction served hanging from its own stand.

The Beverly on Main

7018 E Main St Scottsdale, AZ 85251
(480) 889-5580

This sexy, dark bar falls squarely in the realm of a speakeasy with the unmistakable vibes that transport you to a secret bar that you probably shouldn’t be at but you love anyways. Snag a seat on the long, curvy leather banquette and order a classic Negroni to go along with the delicious elevated bar food. For a snack, try The Beverly’s pan-seared Filet Bites to share.

Pigtails Downtown

1 E Washington St Ste 128 Phoenix, AZ 85004

This gorgeous speakeasy literally blooms with hundreds of plants gracing its walls, but you won’t mind because the vibe is chill and the drinks are delicious. Not ironically, Pigtails is hidden behind a freezer door. Seating is plentiful for a speakeasy and the drinks and food are both really good here. Some favorites include the hibiscus-infused Candy Shop cocktail and the Bruschetta boards.

Sanctum

718 N Central Ave The Grand Phoenix, AZ 85004
(602) 795-8552

Instead of an underground secret bar, Sanctum is on the second floor of The Grand behind an unmarked doorway. This cheeky spot offers seating for about 20, so arrive shortly after the 9 pm opening to grab a spot. We love Sanctum’s Prohibition Bar complete with a bartender who looks like he stepped out of the roaring 20’s. You can order all kinds of tasty cocktails like the classic Sazerac or the Old Cuban.

Platform 18

3626 E Indian School Rd Century Grand Phoenix, AZ 85018
(602) 844-4643

Located inside an old Pullman rail car, Platform 18 offers guests a unique speakeasy experience. When you first step onboard, the conductor presents you with a welcome glass of champagne. And while you enjoy your time aboard, the train “travels” a 90-minute journey through the bayous of southern Louisiana. Drinks here are just as well-thought-out as the atmosphere on Platform 18, and we love the passionflower Gentleman’s Heist and the non-alcoholic Constable’s Companion.
