Clover Joe’s has a limited menu because they know its target market. The cheesesteak is at the top of their list, along with other classics such as meatball subs and burgers. The Irish theme is seen throughout their entire décor, so look for the green shamrock to know you’ve arrived at the right place. You’ll have one of the best cheesesteaks outside of Philly. And don’t forget to add a side of hand-cut fries to your order.

Cheat’s is open seven days a week and puts a fun spin on the classic cheesesteak. You’ll find the steak on a toasted sesame hoagie along with Cheez Whiz. You’ll also find a chicken and vegetarian cheesesteak on the menu. Seasoned fries are a great side, though if you really want a treat, we recommend the loaded cheesesteak fries. Be sure to grab a soft-serve ice cream cake cone for dessert. There’s seating inside, but the best vibe is outside under their red umbrella picnic tables.

Steak ‘n Hoagie Shop is an unassuming casual restaurant where all of the specials are featured up on the boards. Hot and cold subs as well as salads are made to order. The cheesesteak came highly recommended, and it absolutely didn’t disappoint. The toasted bread really helped to make it something special. The service is quick and the prices can’t be beat.

One of the many reasons to love Chex Grill & Wings is that they’re open until 11 PM on Friday and Saturday nights. Order at the counter and find a table in the spacious dining room. There’s even a place for the kids to play while you wait on your meals. The Philly sub can be changed up to include peppers, mushrooms, and even Buffalo sauce. You’ll also find family specials on wings as well as dozens of different flavors.

Chubz Famous Chiliburgers was a pleasant surprise when we learned that they had more than just burgers on their menu. Their ribeye sandwich can be turned into an amazing cheesesteak sandwich when you place your order. The specials are written on the chalkboard, and it’s a kid-friendly place. Order at the counter, sit in front of the grill, or at one of the tables and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere while you dive into your sandwich. They’re messy but worth every bite.

Rusty’s is a casual institution that does not disappoint. It’s been around since 1983 and is known for its stuffed spuds as well as its daily specials. The “South Charlotte” Cheesesteak is one of their signature items, and you can order it with either beef or chicken. If you want mushrooms, they can add those, too. It’s a casual place where you can place your order at the counter and find a cozy place to sit. They can bet pretty busy, but that’s because the food is so good.

Midwood Smokehouse may be known for its barbecue, but they also have an amazing sandwich on its menu. The relaxed joint has the 1930 Cheesesteak featuring a unique take on the classic, complete with thinly sliced smoked brisket. Add caramelized onions and white American cheese, and it’s good until the very last bite. A ton of local brews are offered, too, and you can find them all on the chalkboard. There are three locations around Charlotte, so one is likely to be near your travels.
