Boston, MA Restaurant Guide

When it comes to city pride, Bostonians are second to none.  Whether you’re talking their passion for pro sports, the beloved, historical neighborhoods they’ve grown up in or the incredible culinary scene their City has had for decades, Bostonians are a boastful bunch – and maybe they should be.  They have world class restaurants, tons of entertainment options and the freshest seafood on the Atlantic coast.

Let’s begin with Boston’s neighborhoods.  Between Beacon Hill, Charlestown and the West End, there are great neighborhoods with rich, American history on every block – and bingeable bites, too.  We’ve covered South End, a neighborhood in Central Boston with options for locals and visitors alike, along with North End, which is one of the most visited neighborhoods in Boston by out of towners.  We’ll be covering more of these areas in the coming weeks, eventually covering all 23 of Boston’s beautiful neighborhoods.

You can’t brag about Boston without talking Chowdah!  When you’re talking Clam Chowder, you’re talking about one of America’s oldest dishes – a perfect emblem of American’s most historic city.  Historians believe the New England Clam Chowder that’s so ubiquitous in Boston was actually created by settlers to the area in the 1700’s.  Considering the ingredients are items you could find in 1700 or 2017, you’re probably tasting history with every bite.  We rate our favorite Boston Clam Chowder spots here.

Of course, Clam Chowder isn’t all there is when it comes to Boston seafood.  While the lobster roll may be more associated with Boston’s neighbors to the North in Maine and to the South in Connecticut, Boston is a place where you can get the best of both worlds.  Whether you like it Maine style with Mayo, or Connecticut style with melted butter, you can find it in Boston.  We list our favorite lobster roll locations, along with some great seafood spots, in our guide.

Part of 19th and 20th century American history along the east coast is a history of Irish and Italian immigrants coming to the area and creating enclave communities that celebrated their cultures and cuisines.  Boston of course was no exception.  While the city is known for a great St. Patrick’s Day parade and a large Irish community, its Italian community is just as large and impactful to the city’s cultural fabric.  That’s why Boston may have some of the best Italian restaurants in the country, with locations that have been around for decades, and new restaurants popping up that use old world approaches in new world settings.

Finally, you can’t talk about Boston without talking breakfast.  Bringing it back to Boston’s Irish immigrant history, The St. Patrick’s Day breakfast held by the City of Boston is a historical tradition, and it’s actually a perfect reflection of Boston’s breakfast traditions.  With a focus on farm fresh ham, bacon, eggs and bread/potatoes, the traditional American breakfast has distinctly Irish roots.  You’ll find great breakfast spots all around Boston on our list, along with great bagel spots – part of the City’s also rich Jewish tradition and history.
