For the uninitiated, mumbo sauce is sweeter than barbecue sauce, albeit similar to it, and totally addicting. This red-orange sauce is a little spicier with a bit of tang, and oh so popular in restaurants around D.C. You can enjoy the sauce with fried chicken wings, fried rice, French fries, jumbo fried shrimp–anything, really! If you are visiting Washington D.C., there are numerous places to sample this local sauce. Here’s where to find the best mumbo sauce in D.C.!

Henry’s Soul Café

1704 U St NW Washington, DC 20009
(202) 265-3336

Henry’s Soul Cafe’s mumbo sauce goes well paired with their mouthwateringly savory fried chicken wings. They are also known for their sweet potato pie. The chicken is meaty with its crispy skin at Henry’s, and the taste is awesome. The syrupy red sauce topped over these fried wings is a real delicacy. In terms of dining experience, they are known to have a very welcoming staff to serve you with a smile. You will not know you are in D.C. until you visit the Henry’s and get to taste of their mumbo sauce and fried chicken wings or sweet potato pie.

Yum’s II Carryout

1413 14th St NW Washington, DC 20005
(202) 232-5608

We highly recommend Yum’s II Carryout jumbo wings topped with their tangy take on mumbo sauce. Serving mainly Americanized Chinese food, there are other dishes that pair well with mumbo sauce as well, such as egg rolls or fried wontons. Located off U Street, Yum’s II Carryout is adjacent to tons of great bars and restaurants. So yes, it’s great drunk food!

Wingo’s

2218 Wisconsin Ave NW Washington, DC 20007
(202) 878-6576

Wingo’s mumbo sauce has a unique taste with its sweet and smoky flavor as they’ve tweaked their ingredients from the traditional mumbo sauce, resulting in a spicier take and boy is it fire! At first, they served both the traditional and spicier version of the mumbo sauce. However, the spicier Thai chili pepper prepared mumbo sauce was all the rage for their clients. Nothing beats their fried chicken and mumbo sauce with the extra heat of their Thai chilies. Yummm.

Roofer’s Union

2446 18th St NW, Washington, DC 20009
(202) 232-7663

Roofer’s Union’s wings are the BEST dish to pair with their mumbo sauce. Not many places in DC offer honey glazed wings like this with just the right balance of spices and that requisite crispy crunch. Accompanied by their mumbo sauce, you will definitely leave satisfied!

Kochix

400 Florida Ave NW Washington, DC 20001
(202) 232-3468

KoChix prepares Korean-style wings that are as HIGHLY addicting. Indeed, one is never enough, and you will always find yourself asking for more! The wings at KoChix are lightly double-fried, giving them quite the satisfying crunch. Their Korean-style wings are irresistible to anyone who happens to try them. As if that is not enough, they also have amazing soy garlic and hot honey spicy mumbo sauces. Both sauces complement perfectly well with these wings.
